The unit is approximately 4 years old. I have checked the water inlet piece and it seems to function correctly. The bottom spray arm seems to also function correctly. The pump also seems to have plenty of power. The middle and upper spray arms do not appear to have very much water pressure coming from them although there is enough pressure to rotate them. Food is still left on the dishes after the cycle is over. The only noticeable issue I see is the rubber gasket which attaches to the rear of the middle spray arm and seats into the back of the dishwasher body appears to be worn out and has cracks in it. Can this small gasket cause such a drastic loss of water pressure that the dishes are not getting clean?

Yes it could as water can pour out here and not go to the middle and upper spray arms.

Can I purchase just the gasket? It appears I would have to purchase the entire spray arm just to get this gasket.

It is item 61 in section 09.
FYI often more info (views and Q&A etc.) is available on a part if you click on it's picture or description.

The part I need is a rubber gasket which is attached to the back end of 24a. The part you listed (item 61) is a grommet that the gasket seats into. It appears I would have to purchase the entire arm just to get this one gasket.

I really hate to purchase this part and it not be the problem. How 'hard' is the water supposed to spray when it comes out these spray arms? When I saw it, it was as though the water was doing only a little more than allowing gravity to pull it down. It was almost like the dishes were taking a shower as opposed to being forcefully sprayed. Can this gasket affect the pressure that much?

It should spray out really hard.
About the same as the lower arm.

Yes it could but I cannot guarantee it will fix your problem.

You said the lower spray arm works OK so I am assuming that the filters in the unit are clean.

You also said that the water inlet is OK so I am assuming that the water level is OK.
You could double check this by adding a quart or two of hot water to the unit
after a fill to see if it starts spraying properly.
Just be careful that you do not overfill the tub.
If it is a low water problem then it is probably a partially clogged filter screen on the inlet side of the water valve.
Remove the valve and clean the screen. Do not permanently remove it as it is there to keep crud out of the valve which could cause a flood.
If the screen is clean replace the valve.

If my assumptions are correct then all I can think of is the gasket.
