I went to use my dryer today. I push the button to start it and it acted like it was going to start, but wouldn't. I decided to open it and the light inside flickered on and off and then went out completely. The timer still works at least what I think is the timer cause I turn it and I can hear a noise that sounds like something is grinding a little bit but when I turn the timer off it stops. It's a maytag dryer. I used it fine yesterday. It's not the fuse box either as I went a flipped it to make sure and nothing. I was told it may be the thermal fuse somewhere else, but would the thermal fuse make it where the light on the inside wouldn't come on? Thanks for any help.

Here are your parts, includes a wiring diagram.

Could you elaborate on this?
Did it hum and not start or what exactly did it do?

This may have been a coincidence so I would check the bulb with a meter.
May even be a loose light bulb.

The grinding tells you that then timer motor is working but does not tell you that the timer is OK.

It's not the fuse box either as I went a flipped it to make sure and nothing.
Just flipping the breaker off/on does not ensure that the unit is getting the correct voltage. The only way to be sure is to measure the voltage at the terminal strip in the unit.
One thing that sort of indicates that the unit is getting the correct voltage (120 volts) ( L1 to Neutral) is that the timer motor seems to work.

No as the drum light is before the fuses in the circuit.
There are two thermal fuses in this unit (item 11 in section 05) and Item 10 in section 06). Note that if either one blows you will not get any noise from the main motor when you try to start it as they kill power to the motor.

Yes, it hummed like it the engine was trying to start, but now nothing happens when I push start. It's like the unit isn't getting any electricity to it, but the timer still works.

I am assuming that the timer not only makes a noise but also advances in timed dry mode.

Take a look at the wiring diagram included in the parts link from my earlier post.

You will see two thermal fuses in the motor circuit (one on the heater and one on the blower).
Unplug the unit and check both of theses with a meter.
They both should be 0 ohms.

That it hummed and now is dead points to a more serious problem than just a blown fuse.

Could be the motor burned out.
Check it's windings with a meter. I do not know the resistance values but there should be continuity.

Could be just a broken belt and the hum you heard was the motor running.
This does not explain why now it is dead because even if the drum does not turn there ios air flow as long as the motor runs.

Could be a centrifugal switch/mechanism problem on the motor.
In the wiring diagram you will see two switches just under the motot.
These are the centrifugal switches in the motor. They are activated when the motor gets close to operating speed.
One of them switches in the heater. This ensures that there is air flow before the heater comes on.
The other switches out the start winding. If left in circuit this would cause the motor to overheat.
So if they are activated when the motor is at rest a couple things would happen.
The fuse on the heater would blow because it is on without air flow.
The motor probably would not start because the start winding is not connected.
If they are activated it could be that the motor is just clogged solid with lint or the mechanism in the motor that activates them is broken.seized.
The motor must be replaced if it is a mechanism problem.

I am going to the cottage for a few days so will not be available.
When the forum is busy if other regular posters see that the post is being answered they do not have the time to check the post. So If you require help when I am gone you may want to start a new post with a blurb about what you have done so far and a link to your original post.
