Top oven broiler and bottom oven bake won't heat. How can I determine if it is the heating coils or something more significant?

A model number may help others help you.

Check them for resistance with a meter.

Be sure to remove power from the unit when doing this as many units always have one side of the line (120 volts) connected to the elements even when they are shut off.

Undo the screw/s holding the element to the back of the oven.
Carefully pull the element into the oven.
Remove the wires from it and check it with a meter.
Should be around 20 ohms.
It is a good idea to clip something (clothespin etc.) to the wires so they do not disappear into the back of the unit while you are checking the element.
