Hi there!

My electric dryer will not spin. I could hear the motor humming trying to start, so I gave it a push with my hand and it started spinning. Once it starts its all fine. Does the motor have brushes? It seems like the problem might be worn brushes? Or some kind of relay? Please help!

Thanks in advance,
Connito

No.

It also does not have a relay.

Turn the drum in the correct direction.
Just to see if there is too much drag on it and that is preventing it from running.
You may want to try this on a couple other units to get a feel for it.

If set to a heating cycle does it produce heat when the drum is not turning?
If yes then it could be a problem with the centrifugal switches on the motor always being activated.
There are two switches on the motor.n They activate when the motor gets close to operating speed.
One of them switches on the heater.
The other switches out the start relay which would cause the motor to overheat if left in circuit.
So if the switches are activated when the motor is at rest. You get heat and there is no start winding so the motor will not start.

Check /clean the motor.
Check the wires at the motor.

Note that usually your problem requires replacing the motor but it is worth checking the above.

It may not be worth fixing unless it is in good shape.
I would check all moving parts, seals etc. in it before ordering a motor soyou will have an idea what a basic overhaul of the unit will cost.

Thank you so much for your quick and thorough reply!!

There is no resistance when I turn the drum and when give it a push it starts to spin with load of wet clothes in it without a problem. It seems that the motor is okay, it's just has a hard time starting. Perhaps that means that I need a new one? I am not sure what do you mean by checking the motor. What should I check? I suppose I will take the dryer apart and clean the motor and perhaps then I will see something obvious.

The unit doesn't start at all, or doesn't turn on so to speak, unless the drum is turning.

Thanks again!

Best,
Connito

Yes that is normally where this type of problem sends up.

Make sure it is clean and not clogged solid with lint.
Check the wires that connect to it.
