Our DW washes fine, but it would be nice to have new water...

When it hits the drain cycle, it is dead silent--like crickets. times out, and then washes with the old water....

any suggestions--?

Here are your parts, includes a wiring diagram.
Parts for Maytag MDB7600AWS Dishwasher - AppliancePartsPros.com

Check across the drain motor with a meter when it should be draining.

If you have 120 volts then replace the drain motor.

If there is no voltage then check the wires that go from the drain motor to the control board.
If they are OK then odds are that the control board is toast.

Thanks. I figured it was one if those two.
Could it be the panel if it runs through the rest of the cycle? ie, selective loss of one part?

Yes.
The drain motor is turned on by either a relay or a triac so just that device could fail.
Also the electronics that control the device can go bad without affecting anything else.

Be careful with the terminology.
The control panel is the keypad.
The control board is what actually controls the parts.
