The washer starter malfunctioning today. It will not fill with water. No matter where you place the dial to start a cycle, the washer starts spinning immediately. Once it finishes the first spin cycle, and enters the rinse cycle, the washer stops, but won't fill, then starts spinning again until it reaches the "off" point. Do I have a bad switch?

Sounds like a faulty water level pressure switch (level control). Open control panel, unplug clear hose from pressure switch. Does it fill now? If not, disconnect wiring connector from switch and jump the violet and pink wires together. Does it fill now? If so, switch is bad. Whirlpool W10335056 Switch-Wl - AppliancePartsPros.comEric

I ran the test suggested above. Since the washer filled when I jumped the two wires, I replaced the switch. I did not replace the clear hose because I wanted to make sure it worked. I started the washer as with the new switch in in a normal wash cycle, and it filled as expected; it then went into the spin cycle. When I expected it to fill again for the rinse cycle, it did not fill and went straight to the agitate and then spin. I tried top get it to fill in other rinse cycles on the control dial and could not get it to fill. What am I missing? Bad Timer, control?

after posting these symptoms last night, here is what I did to complete a complete wash cycle:
-turn the dial to the start position for a normal wash cycle
-open the control panel and pull the clear hose from the switch
-pull the dial to start the flow of water then reattach the clear hose
-listen for the end of the first spin cycle and push the dial after the spin cycle switches off
-open the control panel and pull the clear hose from the switch, again
-pull the dial to start the flow of water then reattach the clear hose and let the washer run to the end of its cycle
Does this help at all?

Yes, sounds like the hose or the air chamber that it attaches to on the tub may be clogged. This is common on GE washers but not so much on Whirlpool. You need to remove the cabinet and check the air dome and hose on the right rear part of the outer tub. You can clean the end of the hose out if it's clogged or flush out the air chamber if it has debris in it.

Dumb question: how do you remove the air chamber? I can't get behind the washer to see it well enough to tell is there is a clip, or if it screws off. I replaced the hose, and the washer is starting its cycle properly, but the rising water level is not triggering the switch to start the agitation cycle, so I figure it must be the air chamber clogged up. I blew on the hose before setting it on the air chamber, and the switch mechanism clicked.

It's not removable. Clean with a wire fished into hose inlet and flush with hot water using a turkey baster or similar device. Be careful not to break the hose nipple off.

I ended up shooting a bleach-water mixture in, then blew air in with a compressor. It is working properly at the moment.
