My son bought a house with an Electrolux dishwasher, which (upon inspection) has an overheated connector on one side of the heating element. I know that overheating can occur when the connection is loose/bad, but is this the likely cause of the problem (or can the problem have been caused by a bad heating element - or something else that should be investigated)?

The likely cause is a bad connection at the connector.

You will have to get the old connector off,
The heating element connector must be cleaned. I would use emery clothe or sandpaper.
You will then have to put a new connector onto the wire.
Be sure to use a high current type connector.
You will have to cut the wire back till you get nice clean copper.
