The freezer stopped. I have cleared it of its contents. I cannot get the compressor to turn on by dialing the thermostat. When I turn the thermostat from the OFF position I can hear a slight hum noise.

Is there a way to test if it is thermostat vs. compressor.

Purchased 20 years ago. Have replace the thermostat 10 years ago.

Thank you

Here are your parts

You could unplug the unit and then short the two wires to the thermostat together. Just be sure they cannot short to anything else.
Then plug it in and give it a try.
If it fires up then it is a thermostat problem.

If it does nothing.
Then it could be a compressor or a start device or an overload problem.
Below is a link to a site with info on how to check the compressor windings.
How To Fix a Refrigerator - Appliance Repair Guide - ACME HOW TO.com

Note that the compressor winding resistance test is not a definitive test. it will tell you is a compressor is bad if the test fails but does not tell you that the compressor is good. As it may have a winding to winding short or mechanical problems.

There is not a good way to check the start device so if it is OK physically the normal method is replace it and see what happens.
