Washer works fine until spin cycle. It starts out fine but goes to shaking and thumping violently. It shakes machine and sounds like the drum is hitting the side of machine. When it is off, it spins freely, but comes around and makes a thump and seems to be in a groove. The basket seems to move too much from side to side also. What do you think?

You probably have a loose drive block nut. Remove agitator and check. You will need a special spanner wrench to tighten it properly.
If it looks worn out, you will need a new one available on this site. Part # AP2905773

I also have the Maytag SG1000 and have experienced this same problem. Mine was fixed by a sears repairman by replacing the damper kit, which are 3 little pads that the tub sits on. This worked for us!

However as you probably it come result from other things as well, like worn springs, etc.

Hope this helps someone:).
