Set on "auto sense dry" and will not generate any heat.
Set on "timed high heat dry" it will generate heat.
Hot like normal.
Checked all thermostats. All show "closed".
Except for the "dryer cycling thermostat" purple leads which is open till?
Would this need replacing?
Or does it sound like....?

It probably read open because your meter scale was too low.
This is the thermostat's internal heater so your scale vas to be higher than 10,000 0hms to read it.

Since very little changes between timed and auto modes I would suspect the timer contacts.
Place the timer where it will not heat and unplug the unit.
Check C to A at the timer should be 0 ohms.
