Everything appears to be working except for the spin cycle. Water drains and the motor runs but no spin (it agitates fine, coupler is fine). Could it be a bad clutch or brake or even gearcase? How would I test for each? The clutch spins when I spin the gearcase coupler by hand ( I can spin the clutch band by hand with some effort). The basket will not spin at all unless I manually release the brake by hand and only then can I spin the tub by hand (the driver brake cam seems a little wobbly). Oh yeah, there was a black soot in the clutch and on top of the gearcase cover when I disassembled the machine – could this be from the brake seizing or the clutch? I was doing a few big loads (blankets) prior to this problem.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately this is difficult to diagnose long distance, and about the only advice I can give is to try a couple of things, starting with the easiest and least expensive.

1. By pass the lid switch to rule this out as a problem.

2. I would replace the clutch, and see if that fixes it.

3. If that does not fix it, then you are looking at replacing the brake tube assembly. See the link on the first page of this washer repair forum.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
