We have a 20 year old Whirlpool washer PS871336WO that keeps blowing the fuse, just at the beginning of the normal wash cycle. Usually only blows once or twice and then the wash will finish on through. After several weekends of trail and resetting the fuse, the delicate and permanent cycles dont seem to cause a problem. This is not connected to a GCFI outlet but it is a 20amp dedicated outlet. With it being 20 yrs old, I'm thinking of replacing several parts while I have it broken aprt/down but want to make sure and resolve this issue. Which part or fix would i need to focus on?

TIA

Check the model number, doesn't come up. Doesn't look like normal Whirlpool model number. Should be a label with model number and serial number.

I'm not sure how I even fat fingered that. The correct model number is LSR7233BWO

Is it a fuse or circuit breaker that is tripping? If breaker, could just be a bad breaker. You really need to use an amprobe to check current draw of the motor. Not easy to troubleshoot this one over a forum.

:D Sorry I didn't say that right. It is the breaker in the house breaker box. I had an extra one and replaced it and that didn't change anything. I haven't taken the washer or its controls apart yet and don't know if thee is a fuse on the washer. I didn't mean to be confusing. I do appreciate your responses.

There's no overcurrent protection in the washer except for a thermal overload in the motor. Does the breaker trip as soon as the washer is turned on fill or only when the motor comes on for agitation and/or drain/spin?

The washer will fill with water as normal but just seconds after the actual wash starts is when it trips. We usually only need to reset the breaker once or twice. If we have to reset the breaker twice it is twice in a row with only 30 seconds or so in between. The rest of the wash cycle along with draining, rinsing and spinning have always completed as normal.

Remove drain pump from motor and see if that makes a difference. If so, then something may be in pump jamming it or it's just going bad. If no difference take the motor out and check rotation of motor shaft by hand. Should be easy with no binding. If stiff, then motor bearings are going bad. If easy to rotate, check gearcase input shaft. CCW rotation is for agitation, CW for spin.
