Bought a fridge for the garage for a couple hundred bucks. Got it home and after running a few minutes it tripped GFI. Reset gfi and trips immediately. Non-gfi gets power to unit but no compressor or fan. Found defrost mode seems to be the issue, timer is stuck and when that happens, gfi goes or if plugged into non-gfi, just sits until timer manually moved out of defrost mode. Figured it was the timer so that was replaced but the issue persists so I guess it's something else. What would cause the timer to stick in defrost mode until manually re-set (when on non gfi)? Could a heating element problem cause this?

Check the model # Also, it seems like a bad wire to the defrost timer, unless you got the wrong timer.

Thanks for the reply. Full model number is MRS26LGJC0....the number on the sticker inside the fridge left off the 0 for some reason. I should have the right timer; it was the appropriate part number per this website and identical the one removed from the unit so I guess it's time to check the wires....or cut losses and buy a new fridge.

See the attachment for the wiring diagram. Could be that you received a bad timer. To confirm check across pins 1 to 3 at the timer for 120 volts during defrost. If the voltage is there and the timer does not advance then the timer is bad. If there is no voltage move the control thermostat colder to see if then you get the 120. Looks like the thermostat must be closed for the timer to advance. denman attached the following image(s): |

Thanks. Since the thermostat must be closed for the timer to advance, I assume a bad thermostat could also be causing the issue?

Denman is correct if it is too cold in the garage, the defrost timer motor never gets voltage till the cold control turns on.
