GE Front Loader - Clanks when spinning, started smoking

My GE front-load washer has worked really well for the last year that I've owned it (bought used). We recent moved, and the first few loads ran well, but the last two I began to hear a loud "clank" every time the washer drum spun. The first time I noticed it, I didn't think too much about it so I ran another load. This time, when the washer stopped its cycle, the barrel was smoking.
When I removed the top, I checked the rear pulley belt and it appears to be in good condition. However, I'm concerned with taking the drum apart. Should a professional be called in or is this is a simpler fix than I imagined? If so, what do you think may be the cause?
Thanks!

This is one of those situations where we really need to be there to examine the machine in detail. So from this distance I can only speculate that something broke or the counter weight became undone during the move and that the drum is off center putting a strain on the motor and belt and that is the cause of the smoke you are seeing.
Unless you see an obvious problem I think you are better off replacing the machine with a much simpler model. These GE's are great when they work, but when they don't they are very expensive to repair.

You can remove the bottom drain hose and see if there is something jamming the inner tub
