Have a Whirlpool washer that would not spin. Inspected the underside and found the coupler broken. Pulled the motor down and installed a new coupler. Reattached the motor, turned it on and while it does now spin, its making either an 'on, off, on, off, on off' noise/clicking, or a sound like the brake/clutch engaging, disengaging, engaging, disengaging, etc. This happened before on another washer I was working on, again immediately after replacing the coupler. What could be causing this problem? Seems weird to have it happen immediately after replacing the coupler. Maybe I'm doing something wrong when replacing it? Should I be spinning the transmission to a certain position or something before reattaching the motor? As I mentioned earlier it seems like the noise is coming from the clutch or brake. Any ideas?

Post video to youtube so we can hear it. It could be that you are not getting the coupler parts on correctly causing the motor to bind. If your using the new couplers with the metal inserts, you must use a socket and hammer to tap them on as they must be on so that they are flush with the end of the shafts. Otherwise, there will be too much lateral pressure on the motor when you install it. This usually causes a burning smell as well. DIY'ers do this all the time and it can ruin the motor quickly.

Here are a few videos which hopefully will help someone help me identify the problem. It seems like the noise is coming from the motor switch. In the second video you may have to jump towards the end to hear the noise, right after the machine stops filling. Sorry for the quality, etc. of the video. It was my first attempt at it. Here is a video that more closely describes what we're experiencing... GE Washer Motor Making Loud Noise - YouTubeWe dropped the motor down and it doesn't make the noise by itself. Dropped the transmission down and attached it to the motor and still no noise occurs. Seems like the only time it happens is when the motor and transmission and back inside the machine. It seems like for whatever reason the motor is encountering too much resistance when trying to get up to speed. Could this be a gearbox issue?
