To get to the problem, this whirlpool electric dryer works fine except the dryerdoesn't stop at the end of the cycle. If you open the door it will stop butwhen you close it, it starts back up. The timer moves during the cycle as itshould with heat and cool down as you would expect. You use to have to pressthe "push to start" button to start the dryer but since this problemof the only way to stop it is to open the door start you only need to close thedoor and it will start running and rotating the drum.
Is this a case that the timer needs to be replaced or what would you suggest medo to diagnosis the problem. We have replaced a number of the parts on it overthe years and would like to fix this one and keep the machine running in order.

Very old dryer (1985)? Timer no longer available from APP. Timer part number is 695759. Does this dryer have auto-dry function? If so, does timer advance during auto-dry? Does problem occur even when timer is manually placed into OFF position? Can you post photo of wiring diagram?

Ok, good photo's, thanks for those. You didn't answer the questions though. If you manually place timer in OFF position, does dryer stop with door shut? Does timer advance when in either of the auto dry cycles? (automatic regular or automatic permanent press). If dryer does not shut off with door closed and timer in OFF position, then a bad timer is one of the problems. The other problem is either a bad start switch or bad motor switch. Unplug dryer, open control panel and disconnect wire from start switch NO terminal. Plug dryer back in, if it still starts, then motor switch is faulty. If not, then start switch is bad.

Sorry, the answer s are:
If you manually place timer in OFF position, does dryer stop with door shut? NO. Does timer advance when in either of the auto dry cycles? (automatic regular or automatic permanent press). Yes, it heats at the expected points and cools down late in the cycle but never will turn off without the door being opened. If dryer does not shut off with door closed and timer in OFF position, then a bad timer is one of the problems. We figured that and as you indicated or local parts place shows no one has it any more. I will try the control panel start witch tomorrow. Do you see where either the start switch or the motor switch are available still?

Do the test I suggested to determine if start switch is bad. I doubt that the problem is the motor switch. Motor switch is unavailable as well anyway. If it was bad, you would have to replace the motor with new type that has different type of switch.

Sorry for the delay, I did the test and we found when we tested the start switch we found it was it. We removed the switch and looked at it and determined that the lower switch contacts were burned and pitted. upon shaking it, a small amount of the burned area came loose. When we reconnected it, the drier started running and going off at the normal desired times and when the door was closed and it was in the off position of the timer.
Thanks much for your help in solving this problem.
