When i tried running the service test on the Defrost thermostat and defrost circuit, i was unable to select the closed/shorted setting. Any ideas? Does this mean the circuit board is bad? Freezer is currently defrosted and at room temp. Below is the resource i used to test it.
Service Test 1 – Defrost Thermostat & Defrost Circuit Test
When selected this test will display the state of the defrost thermostat. In order to perform this test the defrost heater will be energized. The test is activated and deactivated using the Refrigerator Up key. Once activated, this test must be deactivated to move to another test number. The Freezer Up / Down keys allow selection of the test to be performed.
This test also allows observation and measurement of proper defrost function. You can observe defrost heat and voltages while the test is activated.

I am not sure if I understand the question.
The service test does not control the defrost thermostat, it just shows you if the thermostat is open or closed.
With the freezer at room temperature it should be open.
What was the original problem?
If it was that the evaporator coils where clogged solid with ice/frost (defrost problem) then you force a defrost cycle and check if the defrost heater gets cold.
The defrost thermostat test should show that the thermostat is closed when frozen.
It opens just above freezing once all the ice/frost has melted off the evaporator coils. |

Originally the fridge was warm and the freezer cold. I defrosted
the coils and and tried to diagnose the problem.
I measure 20ohm across the heater.
Fan was working fine. So was damper in fridge.
I used the service test on the thermostat and it was Open.
A forced defrost showed no voltage on wires to heater.
Later I realized that since the freezer was still at room
temp the defrost did nothing. I turned everything on and
let it cool. The service test showed closed. The forced defrost
turned the heater on.
Now I believe the only other option is the timer board.

Yes, that is what I would do.
I am assuming that before you defrosted the evaporator coils that they were iced/frosted over to the point that the evaporator fan could not pull air through them. |

Yep. Solid sheet. Thought it odd that it took seven months
to freeze up again when most posts commenting on bad timer
refer to the fridge only lasting weeks after a defrost.

One other thing to check is the defrost thermostat.
If it is deformed/bulged replace it even if it measures OK.
re: water has got into it and this can cause it to fail completely or go intermittent. |
