My dryer will heat and dry clothes but the knob/timer does not move. I have to manually keep time and turn the dryer off.

If this problem occurs in both timed dry and auto dry cycles, then the timer is bad. If only in auto dry, could still be timer but may be a problem in the heater circuit. You will need a multimeter to take some measurements.
