Due to the bitter cold in our area and the basement not being heated (landlord issue), my washer has been having some problems. When it's in the teens or lower, the washer won't fill with water because of frozen hoses. We just went through a cold spell last week and since today was warmer, I thought I would try to use the machine. At first it wouldn't do anything, but eventually water trickled out and then came out full force and filled the washer. Luckily I didn't put clothes in the washer. When it finished filling up, it made a faint hum like it was going to move into the washing cycle, but then after about 15 seconds it clicked and stopped making the hum and nothing happened. I tried moving it to different cycles and the same thing happened. I also could not get the water to drain. I finally scooped all the water out by hand because I'm not sure when I can get it fixed if it is, in fact, broken. Is the cold weather affecting my washer or is it something else? Thanks so much for any help.

Probably the water that is always in the drain pump and drain hoses is frozen. The pump is driven by the same drive motor that runs the washer in agitation and spin. Motor won't run if pump is jammed by ice.

I will try again tomorrow and see if it works. Next week it's supposed to get cold again. If the drain pump and hoses are frozen, is there any way I can prevent this from happening in the future? I have no control over the basement being heated, unfortunately. Thanks for your input.

Eric, I just wanted to let you know that this was exactly the problem! It still didn't work this morning, so I took the washer apart and used a hair dryer to warm up the hoses inside the machine. I could tell there was ice inside of them. After about 30 minutes, I put the machine together again and tried to drain some water and it worked! I could hear little pieces of ice going out through the hoses. I'm going to buy some insulation for the hoses and hopefully this won't happen again in the future. Thanks again for your input. It saved me a lot of money, I'm sure!
