Refrigerator/freezer abruptly thawed yesterday. Fan in the back is running okay. About every 2 1/2 minutes, it sounds like the compressor is trying to turn on, but does not. Is it a bad compressor or something not communicating properly to the compressor?

You most probably have a bad start device plugged in the side of the compressor, order a new one AP3885081and use one of the large white boxs per instructions.
