in reply to your question, I dont think you have a problem with the blower motor, and they are permanently lubricated - each season the gas burner and heat exchanger should be cleaned out * disassembled and cleaned with a brush and use compressed air to blow out burners, combustion area, and inside and outside the heat exchanger, being careful not to break the ignitor. if you are not comfortable doing the cleaning, a local service co. should be able to do it for their basic service call.
dust on the outside of the heat exchanger is what you are smelling, each time burner heats, it burns the dust on the metal surface, which gets forced into the house by the blower. - i assume it gas, but if not, its the same problem, dust needs cleaned from the heat exchanger. hope this helps, echofreez

Mr. Bates : yes, clearly you are not an expert, i simply provided information to be more aware of what needed to be done, - if a service co. is used, someone would know if they were being taken advantage of, just trying to assist,..... 35 + years in HVAC and commercial refrigeration - iam an expert. thank you for your concern.

to : smith watson -clearly another expert..... start the furnace and let it run, if there is a burning smell from the registers, shut it off , remove the front cover, check if the motor is overheating, check for heavy dust on burner box area or if its electric, AND it does have a sequencer, check for burned wiring at sequencers or heating elements. anything else would mean a cracked heat exchanger, and that would mean replacing the whole funace. - no hazards, no danger......... just common sense.
