We've had the repairman out at least 4 times and they have replaced the automatic defrost timers on the both the sidekick fridge and freezer multiple times.

But they keep icing up. It is not the seals or low refrigerant as they are both brand new and this has been checked many times.

Given the ongoing problems after all the repairs... I'm pretty sure the defrost timer isn't running frequently enough for our humid northwest climate.

I think Whirlpool has the timers configured to run when the compressor is on. But I'd like to try having the timers run continuously.

Anyone have the wiring schematic for the EL88TRRWS and EV188NYWS?

Essentially I would to connect terminal 1 to the main supply - not the thermostat - so the timer runs continuously. And then I would have to terminal 4 route through the thermostat onto the compressor.

Make sense?

There is actually a service pointer out on this problem. That document is attached. Have they looked at the date code on the parts they are replacing? This is a fairly new document and they may not know about it yet.

I also cannot find a wiring diagram for either unit.
With luck someone else will jump in with them.
Without the wiring diagram I also can only guess that the defrost timer is running cumulative, in the same boat as you.

Here is the timer. Click on the picture for more info and look at the Q&A section about changing from the 12 hour timer to an 8 hour timer.
Part number: AP4539458
Part number: AP4539458
.

Without a wiring diagram this is difficult to give you specific help.
I can supply you with the sheet that comes with some Whirlpool timers perhaps it will help with the jiggery pokery fix that you want to try.

I would investigate the date code on the timers they have been installing before modifying the timing circuit, especially since this is a known issue and one that is covered under warranty, no matter the age of the unit.

I would also check the date codes first as this is the easiest possible fix.

Thanks so much for posting the link to the note. I happened to be on the phone with Whirlpool when I found your post. Consequently, our fridge and freezer defrost thermostats which were being replaced at the time I was on the phone and on-line have been replaced out of my pocket -- but Whirlpool is sending another pair of parts -- at no cost -- just in case we have a problem. Since we had already purchased the parts and our service man was installing them, we are not able to convince Whirlpool to cover that. However, a spare pair of defrost timers may come in handy.

For those who are wondering where the defrost timers are hidden -- in the back right hand corner at the bottom of the units (when you're looking at the unit from the front). The electrical diagram can be found on the back of the units -- but they don't show you locations of parts -- just what connects to what -- sort of like a subway map.

Again -- thanks for your help!
