Whirlpool Quiet Wash Plus seems to quietly rinse the dishes with the dirty wash water and will not drain during normal cycle. It will drain when I press CANCEL/DRAIN manually. I took apart the insides and cleaned it out removing some debris in the process. It appears the reversing motor does function because I can hear it and it does drain on CANCEL. Any help would be appreciated. This all started after I "fixed" the garbage disposal by simply cleaning out the disposal and drain line. I did not replace the disposal so it is not the drain plug. Thanks for reading.

denman, All good thoughts, thank you for the reply and the tech sheets. I did hook it back up correctly as I just removed the disposal tube vs the drain hose to air gap hose anyway. For reference I do have a disposal with an air gap hooked up as the picture suggests.
I do not understand your statement about the air gap perhaps being toast. as I am under the feeble understanding that the air gap appears to be nothing but a plastic Y tube with a hole at the top. Please explain what toast means as it certainly could be the case for all I know. Any other thoughts?

There may be a couple different types. If yours is just an open Y then it cannot cause a problem unless it clogs up. Some have a spring loaded valve, lets air in, will not let air or water out. In any case if it is looped up higher than the drain that should stop it from siphoning back.
The problem is weird because as you said it does drain with the Cancel so we know the motor is OK. Also you can hear it trying to drain during a cycle. Therefore the only thing I could think of is that the water is siphoning back into the unit.
The next step would be to eliminate this as a possible cause. Undo the drain hose at the air gap and drain it into a pail. Hold the hose in the pail as you do not want it to jump out due to the pressure and get water all over. Also put a towel or a rag over the top of the pail to stop it splashing all over.
This should let you see what is happening to the drain during a normal cycle. |

Thanks again. I agree with everything you said. I cleaned out my Y tube last night (mine is not spring loaded) and there was a small fur ball in there so hopefully that was closing the gap. I've cleaned out every single component I can undue and will put it all back together and run it again tonight. If this does not solve the problem, I agree and will perform the bucket test. I should be clear in that I'm not exactly certain if the water is attempting to drain during the normal cycle. I will fine tune my ears tonight during the normal cycle and test it out. More to follow...thanks again.

Success! Not 100% sure, but it may have been the fur ball in the air gap. I heard a much louder gurgling sound from the air gap on this wash and with a clean set of pipes, it appears to be working like a champ. Denman, you are the man. Nice advice. Thanks for the help.
