The fridge stopped working. The compressor was quite hot. I disconnected it and let it cool down.
Compressor is LG NSA30LACG with 265RFBYY overload protection and P6R8MC starter. Measured 16 ohms between top two compressor pins and 8 ohms between bottom pin (which the overload sits on) and either top pin. Have voltage from thermostat OK. No short to ground. No connection between terminal holes 4 & 5 on starter.
When I restarted the fridge the overload clicked and the compressor vibrated as if running OK. Then the overload clicks in and out and sparks. I didn't leave it on very long as the overload was clicking in and out.
Is this a failed compressor – or a bad overload – or a faulty starter?

If you shake that starter, does it rattle?

No it doesn't.
And I got the hole numbers wrong - they are 5 & 6!

No I can only read DC amps on my meter I think

Okay, well it could be that the compressor is out if that relay does not rattle. However, there is a chance that the relay is bad, even if it doesn't rattle, especially if the compressor appears to vibrate temporarily before shutting off on the overload. So, you may want to replace that relay and see if it will start. If it does not, the compressor is faulty. The relay you need is available below. Mcf 312200500017 Ptc Starter - AppliancePartsPros.com

OK - thank you very much. If I locate an ammeter, should it read 1.3 a as the label – more on starting?

If it is not starting, you will read much higher, like around 10 amps or so, maybe more, before the overload clicks off. If the compressor is locked up, it will read more.
