I have a dryer bought this year. I really want to know what's wrong with it. It will only run when you hold the button in. Simple as that.

Take a look at the sample diagrams in 28. Yours is probably close to the newer GE.

On the motor there are two centrifugal switches. They activate when the motor gets close to operating speed.
One connects in the heating coil.
The other removes the start winding in the motor, which would overheat it if left on. It also provides an alternate path around the start switch so you can release the start button.

If your unit is the same as the one in the sample wiring diagram then the belt switch is also in that keep running circuit so perhaps there is a problem with it.

Note I cannot confirm the wiring for your unit as GE likes to keep everything a secret. There is a possibility that the wiring diagram for your unit may be in the control console.

The belt switch is okay or the unit would not start at all. Either the centrifugal switch is unable to switch because of excessive lint built up around the motor or the motor is faulty. Inspect and clean the motor and if it still will not stay running, the motor will need to be replaced and is available below.
