Dryer seems to stay on high heat no matter if you push ex-low, low, med or high. Is this s bad selector switch or something else?

Here are your parts
Parts for Whirlpool LEC7858AN0 Dryer - AppliancePartsPros.com

See the attachment for the wiring diagram.

Could be a number of things.

First check the heating coil.
Unplug the unit and both wires going to the heating coil.
Measure across the coil, should be 8 to 12 ohms.
Then measure from each coil connector to the frame/Neutral, both sfould be infinite ohms.
If not the heater needs replacing.

If OK
Measure the operating thermostat's internal heater, should be about 8,000 ohms.

If OK
Set the timer to a cycle that does not heat correctly and measure across BU to V contacts on the timer, should be 0 ohms.

On your third step (check timer), do you mean to check temp selector? This unit has four buttons to push. The timer knob on the left has Electronic Dry-Miser, Timed Drying and Fluff Air sections. The Fluff Air works (no heat) The other two options are the same. (Hot all the time no matter which temp button is pushed. Thanks.

You could check it.

Measure across BU to V on the timer with everything connected.
The machine of coarse is unplugged.
The resistance should increase as the units heat output setting is decreased.
