Washer fills up, starts to wash, then stops. You must bang three or four times on the top/front of the washer to get it to start again. Then it stops again. This process repeats itself throughout the entire cycle. It's almost like there's a loose connection somewhere and banging on it makes it connect again.

I would remove the cabinet and check the wiring at the motor harness connector and motor thermal overload switch. In particular, the white wires especially at overload switch. This is the neutral feed to the washer and is a very common problem area. Also check the timer connection inside the control panel.
