I press 'auto wash', as usual for a cycle, and within 3-5 seconds, the panel reverts to 'rinse'. try again, and the same thing happens. Finally got it to stick with 'short wash'. Is this a control panel problem? It it difficult to replace?

Could be the control panel.............do all of your buttons work on the touchpad? I've seen alot of maytag dishwashers lately with bad touchpads within 1-3 years of purchase also.

The buttons on the control panel need to be fixed..whenever you push the button auto wash..it might gets shifted on to the rinse option..

You don't really fix buttons on the control pad you just buy a new touchpad
