My handle on the dishwasher broke so I picked up a new handle that came with a new latch. replaced the old one and now the door closes correctly. when I went to turn the dishwasher on the start button would not work. all the other buttons with the exception of the normal wash button work. I thought maybe one of the switches on the new lock mechanism was bad so I took the new switches off and put the old ones on and reassembled but still the same problem. any idea what I am doing wrong?

You probably pulled on some wires or the ribbon to the touchpad. disconnect all connections to main board and touchpad and clean and inspect them very well. Also if you did the repairs you did without turning off the breaker you may have damaged the board or keypad.

If the power was not turned off and the board on keypad is damaged can it be replaced? is it worth replacing? appreciate the help

I'm pretty sure you mixed some wires up or something if it worked fine before this clean your contacts with a wire brush or sandpaper gently this usually works well because condensation does get up in the connections sometimes. Sure it can but the keypad and main control can be very pricey and it depends on how old your unit is. Keep in mind you can get a new one for 299...........The schematics on this site is confusing it's showing 2 control boards totalling almost $300........and the keypad is $126.......here's your parts i'd say order both parts if you want to fix it and this website will allow you to return the part you don't need. http://www.appliancepartspros.c...r-maytag-mdbh950aws.html
