repair guy came and said the motor was going out on my dishwasher and that it would be more cost effective to replace the dishwasher than just the motor. I am having a hard time believing this (the motor ass. is $142 and dishwasher is $611) is this a job i should attempt myself? I am quite handy and have wrenched on cars for a good portion of my life. I just can't see junking this one and spending more than double the money to replace it...Thanks for any replies. Have a nice day!

Going out ? Usually it's either out or it's not and i am wondering how he made this decision. Did he even look at the inner disposal blade to see if anything is in there making noise ? Did he spin the wheel in there by hand and find some resistance ? Or did he just listen to it

it got very loud then we called him out. He took somthing apart and cleaned a screen and found glass shavings(from broken wine glass) and said they must have made there way into the motor because after he "cleaned" whatever he cleaned it was still making the noise. he then said the motor is going to go bad. now it still gets hott, however it does not spray any water anywhere

I had to change a lot of these motors and usually did it without pulling the dishwasher out. With no time restraint however, and on a first attempt, you can pull the dishwasher out to access the rear clip easier because you cant see it and have to go by feel if you leave the washer in place. Overall it's not too difficult, if you have wrenched on cars i say go for it.
