I have read other posts about the drain plug freezing up but what caused it.
I had the same problem I cleared the drain plug and water goes down to the drip pan just fine. After a couple of days water is once again dripping into the refrig
Pulled the freezer panels off and drain plug and drain tray were full of ice.
I am thinking it might be the heater. Any suggestions on how to test the heater element. What else might be the problem Thanks

you have debris in the drain line causing it or you need to order an aftermarket probe that will attach to your defrost heater and goes down the tube. Or in some model's there's a grommet that stops warm air from coming up into the unit that gets damaged and affects the flow of the defrost from draining. Good luck

Here is a drain heater. Part number: AP3119957
Before installing check that the drip pan under the evaporator coils is nice and clean. Sometimes a buffed up coating of wax on it will help. This prevents frost from forming on it and also speeds up the water. Instead of the above drain heater you can use a length of bare 12 gauge copper wire. Wrap it a couple times around the heater. Just snug not tight or you could damage the heater. Then run it an inch or so down the drain tube. |

Thanks for the quick reply's. Sounds like a couple of easy fixes. Will running some stiff wire down the drain tube do any damage. Or is there a way to get at from the back somehow? So it does not sound like I have a malfunction in the system. Just one thing I do not understand how does something like just start up, never had a problem before. What is better the after market part or just the bare wire? Thanks once again

You only go down it an inch or so.

Not use why you would want to.
The drain heater is just for the top of the drain.

Could be a dirty pan is slowing down the water.
Might also be that water has saturated the area around/under the drain tube exit so that it does not have the insulation value it used to.

Yes it will get very hot.
It will easily burn your fingers. |
