We have a Maytag Performa top load washer and here is what it does.

When the water has gotten to the correct load size, you can hear what sounds like proper operation. If you lift the lid however you will find that the agitator is not moving at all. And here comes the odd part which makes me think the transmission has shot craps.

Just to see if it would spin the tub I turned the timer to the spin cycle setting. With the lid closed I saw water coming out of the drain hose so I lifted the lid to see what exactly was going on in there. Well the tub wasn't spinning...it was agitating but water was draining out of the through the drain hose.

Any ideas?

I assume it is a shot transmission so we are pricing a new washer altogether as it is my understanding it is cheaper to buy new than fix what we have. That is without checking parts prices here.
