We have a Whirlpool side by side purchased new at Lowes 6/28/2007. In June of 2010, we started having problems: the back panel iced up with blocked coils showing once the panel was removed, freezer above 0 degrees, fridge part not staying cold, unit running constantly, and the water filter light reset itself. We bought the extended warranty that got us a repair in 2010. It was the main control board located behind the control panel in the top of the fridge opening. The repairman said that the light resetting itself was a giveaway of the problem.

We are now three years almost to day of the repair and the exact same thing is happening, including the filter light resetting itself from red to green last night. This time we have no warranty and will be buying the part ourselves.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Power surges or just bad equipment? I called Whirlpool and they have no info or recalls for my model. I remember last time the part was on backorder. The very nice repairman said he had seen this very often but I was hoping for more information from everyone here. I would like for this to not happen anymore but it seems like it's not something I can prevent. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Install a 1000 joule surge protector in the wall outlet, I use a Belkin available at Amazon. Use the simple one, around $8.00
