My Kenmore dryer is running too hot.... Even on air only it is running very hot. I would like to repair it if possible but I could use some help getting started.

The first thing I would check is the heating coil.

Unplug the unit.
Remove both wires from the heating coil.
Check across the heating coil. Should be 8 to 12 ohms.
Then check from each coil connector to the heater case. Both should be infinite ohms.
If not the heater is grounded and needs replacing.
Often you can see where it is broken or grounded.

Next would be to check the heater relay.
You could check across the relay contacts. they should be open.
If zero ohms (closed) the relay contacts are wellded together and it needs to be replaced.

Another way to do this is to unplug the unit and swap the motor and heater relays.
I believe they are the same but you should confirm this before swapping.
If the unit now starts as soon as the door is closed and regulates the heat then the relay is bad.
