Hello, I have a GE washer. Model number is WBVH6240. I can't find the serial number anywhere. I know we bought it in '08. During the spin cycle, it gets exceptionally noisy (more than normal). When you open the door, smoke comes out and has a burnt rubber smell. I thought maybe needs a new belt, but this one looks good. Maybe it still needs one, anybody on here have any ideas? Normally I can dig through this forum and answer all questions I have, but I haven't been able to find this particular one. Thanks in advance.

Difficult to say with this model, which has a very troubled history but I suspect the problem is with the bearings in the rear tub assembly. If so the cost of repair does not warrant fixing the machine so you could just go on using it, or go ahead and replace it.
If you don't need a front loader a good basic top loader will do fine.

Ok.I checked the bearings. They are very smooth with zero play in them. Maybe they are still bad, not sure. I wasn't aware this thing has a history. It has been great for us. I would like to at least see if I can find the problem, and then determine if the cost outweighs a new one. Is it possible to be smoking from the tub grabbing the front seal? I am totally at a loss on this one. The upper spring hangers are good. The lower "shocks" appear to be good. I think the noise is the tub knocking the back service panel. The smoke is what is puzzling me. So in short, there can't be many places the smoke is coming from. It does smell like rubber by the way.
Any and all help/recommendations GREATLY appreciated.

We glad this machine has worked for you. Most of the problems have been in the electronics, so if they have not caused a problem you should be fine.
I don't think the problem can be the tub, and if it is not related to the tub then the belt and motor are about the only other possibilities. You might try replacing the belt just because it is an easy an inexpensive thing to do and hopefully that might fix things.
Otherwise unless your motor is failing I am at a loss to explain what is happening.

Ok I will try that. Thank you very much. What do you think about the possibilities of the smoke coming from the tub and front seal? I have left the top of it off so maybe I can tell where it is coming from. The problem is that it doesn't smoke every time. I just have to wait and see.

Well, I checked it last night. When it started making noise, I stabilized the tub to be sure it wasnt hitting the cabinet. It wasnt. Even with the tub still, the noise continued. I could feel the tub's outer surface being beaten seemingly from the inside. So, it sounds like you were right. Therefore, the dangerous question - can you please recommend a good top loader? If not a specific model, maybe at least a brand to stick with? I know there are a ton of different opinions out there, but since you answered my questions, I'd like to have your opinion if you dont mind.

My personal choice is a Whirlpool product (sold under the Whirlpool, Kenmore, Roper, Inglis, and sometimes Maytag and Amana brands) that is a direct drive (no belt) with a minimum of controls.
The GE and Frigidaire basic top loaders are also fine machines.
My only strong recommendation is that you avoid any type of electronic controls. Those controls hate moisture, heat and vibration and a washing machine has all three.
If you look for sales you may well be able to get a new one for $300 to $350.

I'm having a problem with smoke pouring out of my GE front loading washer. The problem occurs during the spin cycle when a medium to large load is in the washer. In addition to the smoke, the washer is making much more noise during the spin. I've found the front of the drum extremely hot when the door is opened. The washer is 6 years old and lightly used by one person. I'm interested in fixing the issue myself, but would like to get some advice before taking the washer apart. Any help would be appreciated!
