I have my refrigerator set to the coldest setting and the freezer set the the midrange temp setting. The temp in the refrigerator ranges from 38 to 46. The freezer is about 14. I took the back panel off in the freezer and found the coils were covered is a solid block of ice. I melted off all the ice hoping that would help. I still have the same problem. I followed the troubleshooting tips I found from Gene in some of the other threads. I turned the defrost timer clockwise until the defrost cycle started ( I had the panel in the back of the freezer off when I did this). After about 5 or 10 minutes you could see the defrost heater heating up and melting the frost from the coils, thus telling me the defrost heater is good. I am assuming that when the defrost thermostat heats up it causes the freezer to drop out of the defrost mode. If I am following the troubleshooting guide it tells me that the defrost timer is bad. My only problem with that is that once I melted out all the frost and ice from the coils, shouldn't the refrigerator and freezer stay colder? I sure could use some help with this problem. Thanks.

The defrost cycle is just by time but the defrost thermostat shuts off the heater once it is just above freezing.

If I am following the troubleshooting guide it tells me that the defrost timer is bad.
Yes, that is correct looking at your first section of this post re: the timer's motor or gears are not rotating the cam so you never get a defrost.

My only problem with that is that once I melted out all the frost and ice from the coils, shouldn't the refrigerator and freezer stay colder?
Yes it should.
Once out of defrost the compressor and it's fan should come back on and cool the unit down. This will take several hours.
The unit should run like normal for a couple days minimum until the coils heavily ice up again.
Is the compressor warm and can you feel it vibrating. This will tell you if it is running. Also it's fan should be running.
If yes.
Make sure the compressor coils are clean.
Remove the evaporator coil cover and check the frost pattern on the coils.
If you just have frost where the freon enters the coils from the compressor, this is an indication of low freon.
If no
Could be the thermostat is faulty.
