Let me start with a thank you to this website, the parts came quickly and fixed my dryer, so I wanted to share the problem and solution.

My maytag gas dryer wasn't drying the clothes. I found out when a load had gone for an hour and was still very damp.

I could see the igniter warm up, the gas start and ignite, only to turn off after about 8 seconds. Off for about a minute, then repeats with flame for 8 seconds. No airflow restrictions either. Tried the gas coils first, but it didn't change anything.

Replacing the thermistor that is in the exhaust line fixed it. After retesting with the cover on the initial flame would go for more than a minute. And yes, testing with the front cover off also produces a cycle of about 8 seconds as well so testing with the cover on really does make a difference.
