I have a Kenmore 110.24852300 washing machine. The machine will not spin. I have been trying to figure out the problem myself, but finally gave up and called a repairman. He said the motor coupling needed to be replaced. That I believe. He showed me the part. My parents have the same washer and this is the part that went out on their machine when it would not spin. At that time, my dad did the repair. (He has some serious health issues right now, so he is unable to help with my repair.) Then the repairman told me that the brake needed to be replaced. He did not have a part to show me though. He said it would cost $225.00 to fix my machine! He said he had to order the parts. Or, he said he could take my machine to his shop and repair it with a used brake and it would be a hundred dollars less. I kept asking him questions to try to understand more about this brake, but his answers seemed to contradict themself. I paid him the $67 for the service call, told him to leave the washer apart and I would let him know if I wanted him to repair it.

I have been searching the net for this "brake" he was talking about. He said the part was around $50. I have some mechanical abilities, and if it will save me some money I would like to repair it myself. I just cannot afford the $225 right now. I do not know how he figured the brake was broken, as he only removed the motor from the bottom. He didn't take the agitator off. I was looking at videos on washer repair, and it seems that to check the brake or clutch parts, you have to remove the agitator.

Can anyone give me an idea of how to check for this brake thing he said was broken?

In order to get to the clutch and/or brake for service, you must remove the gearcase, which requires removing the agitator. The brake prevents the basket from moving during agitation and brings the basket to a quick stop after spin. If you can easily rotate the basket by hand, then you may have a brake problem. The brakes can also be "sticky" which can prevent spin and/or stop the basket very abruptly after spin which can damage the motor coupler.

I would remove the agitator and check the condition of the drive block. Make sure the grooves in the block are intact as well as the two tabs on the spin tube that lock into the grooves. If it checks out ok, remove the washer cabinet, jump out the lid switch and run it in spin mode while observing the clutch hub. If the clutch hub is spinning, the motor coupler and gearcase are ok. You would then need to remove the gearcase to inspect and test the operation of the brake cam driver on the bottom of the basket drive. This is the white plastic piece with a tab on it that extends downward into the clutch housing. Grab the brake cam driver and rotate it counterclockwise. This should release the brake and rotate the basket. If this checks out ok and the tab on the brake cam driver is not broken, then the clutch is probably the culprit and should be replaced.

Yes, the basket is where the clothes go. You said it agitates ok so the coupler is driving the gearcase in the direction for agitation. It does take a bit more force to rotate the gearcase in the opposite direction for spin so the worn coupler could be slipping on the shaft in spin mode only. Go ahead and replace that first and if that doesn't fix the problem, continue on with my recommendations.
