Our Maytag dryer just started making a squeaking/humming noise when spinning. The dryer was still working except for the noise, but it did smell a little hot (not the gas, more like electrical hot). Then later in the day it stopped working altogether. It is still getting current because when I press the button I hear a humming noise when I hold the button down. If I do that for a period of time it creates the hot smell again. Any ideas? Given the noise and the smell it was making and now it won't spin, it might be the motor. Is there any way I can check to make sure it is the motor before purchasing a replacement part? Thanks.

Most likely the problem is a bad motor. Open the door, tape in the door switch, push and hold the start switch and manually rotate the drum. If it would start then the motor is the culprit and you do not have to test it more. You have to disassemble the dryer to access the motor. It is a good idea to clean the dryer, all air ducts and the blower housing at the same time. Check the front drum bearings (# 22 on the diagram) and all moving parts.
