Does it do this in both agitate and spin modes?

This could be an intermittent lid switch, bad connection at the motor connector or a timer problem. I would first open the control panel and jump out the lid switch. See this video. If that isn't it, remove the cabinet and check the motor connector for burnt/corroded terminals. Also check the terminals at the thermal overload switch on the motor. Do you have a multimeter to take some voltage checks and are you comfortable doing that (checking live line voltage)?

Eric

Remove the cabinet and jump out the lid switch. Place washer in spin mode and turn it on. At the motor connector, check for 120vac across the blue wire and white/black wire. Wait til motor shuts off. If you still have 120vac across these wires then the motor is failing. If you lose voltage, check it across the blue wire and the gray wire (may be white). If you have 120vac there but not across blue and white/black, the motor thermal overload has tripped. If you don't have 120vac there, then either the timer is faulty or there is a faulty wire/connection somewhere.

by your explaination it appears to be thermal overload tripped what is the remedy

Run the machine with the water pump removed and see if it still trips the thermal overload. If not, something is jamming the pump. If it still trips, remove the motor and run it with it sitting on the floor. Place your foot on it before starting it as it will tend to jump. If it still trips, the motor is faulty. If not, you may have a gearcase problem or the motor is failing and just can't handle to load. Need to check motor current draw with amprobe when it's driving the gearcase.

so finally got around to checking pump and the motor did not stop with pump off so from your explanation that means the pump is bad or could it just be something in the pump that cause a load on the motor

May be something jamming the pump. Remove the drain hoses and check it out.
