Started a wash this morning, started to fill with water. Returned 5 min later to an awful noise (no smell). Opened washer and it wasn't agitating as it should have been (water level was full). Tried moving to another part of cycle, but still awful noise whether on wash, rinse or spin but nothing was moving. Took out some clothes. Same thing. Wouldn't drain (I will say after we removed the clothes I forgot to close the lid when I was trying spin in which case it wouldn't work). After watching your awesome videos I found a broken coupler on the motor. We replaced the coupler and the dog agitators. .The coupler was difficult to get on the transmission shank, but after some hard wacks it went on. Both the motor shank and the transmission shanks turned freely. We put it all together, and plugged it in and no there is nothing. Doesn't make any noise, doesn't appear to turn on. Checked the door lock mechanism, and that appears to be fine. Checked all electrical connections (under the control panel, and the one at the motor). All seemed fine. Also checked circuit breaker. Any suggestions or is it time for a new washer?

Does it even fill? If not, check for power at the receptacle. Plug something else in there to confirm. If you have power at the receptacle and it won't fill you need to check the wiring. Do you have a multimeter to make continuity checks?

Now the spin cycle works but water does not fill nor does the motor hum during the wash or rinse cycle. Any ideas?

It won't go into agitate mode unless it fills with water. Could be the water level switch, clogged air dome/hose or a timer problem but since it was working ok before you worked on it, it is more likely a loose connection or bad/broken wire terminal somewhere. I would unplug and re-plug the motor connector, timer connector and all other connectors you find inside the control panel including the speed switch, temp switch, water level switch...etc. This would be easy to find with multimeter and wiring diagram but if you have no experience with that, you may be out of luck unless you can find a tech with electrical troubleshooting experience. If you have no luck finding a bad connection, you can try replacing the timer. If you buy it from APP, you can return it if it doesn't work. Any Whirlpool direct drive washer is worth putting money into if it isn't too far gone. They don't make them anymore and the new replacement is junk.

Eric, thank you so much for your advice. I truly appreciate it. We used a multi-tester and the water level switch appears to be fine. Also blew through the tube and could hear a click. Continuity tested the water inlet valve and that didn't appear to pass so we replaced it, but the new one has the same failed reading (perhaps we aren't doing it right) and the washer still doesn't work. We do not have any experience testing the different circuits so we didn't test any others. We did plug and unplug a number of them (not the timer though). However, I turned the timer/wash selector to normal wash light then manually filled the tub with water (by unhooking the cold water hose). It did not start to agitate once the water level was reached (I did the lowest water setting and filled it about 4 holes from the top). However, when I moved the dial to just after 6 minutes on the wash cycle, it started agitating (once I closed the door). Does all that make you think it is the timer? We are trying to decide whether we should replace the timer, or just buy a new washer (perhaps a Speed Queen). Any thoughts?

The water inlet valves are controlled by solenoids. They are not switches, they are coils that typically read somewhere between 200-900 ohms of resistance. I can't really say for sure if it's the timer. Since it worked fine before you worked on it, it would seem that it is something else. Speed Queen top loaders are well made but they do have dumbed down water level and temp control just like all other new washers on the market.

Eric, thanks so much for your help. We ordered a timer through appliancepartspros and it came today (we only ordered it yesterday)! I installed it and the washer works great now! It is so nice to have it working! We did have a repair guy come to tell us what part he thought needed to be replaced, and he surmised the timer, but couldn't understand why it broke after the coupler was replaced. I just wanted to thank you and the videos on this website that made it possible for us to fix it!:)
