I've gone in circles today. This unit cools to 35F in the freezer and 40F in the fridge side.
Coils are clean - under the refrigerator. New relay/overload switch. Compressor & Evaporator fans working. With evaporator cover off - the coils frost up in an hour. Defrost thermostat looks good - intact. Manually placed the refrigerator in a defrost cycle (turn defrost timer). Defrost heater works - ice melts quickly, drains. Low air output from freezer through the vents in the fridge side. When I put the evaporator cover on, there is vibration coming from the evaporator fan/motor and its noisy. Evaporator fan rarely goes off.
Previous owner claims ice machine worked, food frozen and fresh side was cold.
Is it the defrost thermostat or defrost timer or both?
I'm concerned about the vibrating noise that the evaporator motor creates with the cover. It's quiet when the cover is off but the fan spins a bit off balance.
Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I would replace the defrost thermostat, can become intermittent, defrost timer more reliable.

Before I replace the defrost thermostat, I checked and it has continuity.
I have been checking the temperatures and they remain around 35F on the freezer side and 50F on the fresh food side.
There is frost build up (99% & evenly on all coils) but the fridge DID defrost on its own at least twice today and once over night last night.
Is it possible the evaporator motor/fan is not outputting enough airflow?
What if the compressor and evaporator fans run constantly?
Thanks for any suggestions.

With a frost free evaporator and the stabilized freezer temperature is only 35 degrees, you have a refrigerant leak/bad compressor.

Thanks Rich. I'll lay a white sheet over the fridge now.

Whoa , I would step back a little. I could not find anything on the given model number but the info I included is for a SS27AQXHW00 which is probably your unit. See the attachment for the tech sheet The evaporator should be on at full speed whenever the compressor and it's fan are on (they are wired in parallel). You said " There is frost build up (99% & evenly on all coils)" This does not point to low freon. Below is a link check out the example pictures part way down the page. They show the frost pattern of low freon units. http://www.applianceaid.com/refrigerator-not-cold-enough.phpMy guess would be that you have a bad evaporator fan. The compressor would run all the time but the fan is not pulling enough air through the evaporator coils to cool it down enough. If you order it from AppliancePartsPros and it does not fix your problem then they will let you return it. Please see their return policy. Part number: AP3137520
Click on the picture for more info. It is important that the evaporator cover be installed when checking the unit so that you get the proper air flow. |

Well, I successfully replaced the evaporator motor and I'm getting more air but the temps are the same 35F in freezer and 50F in fresh foods!
Not sure what do next. Their some more air circulating but its not any colder. Heater, defrost, defrost timer are working. No door leaks, lights turn off, etc.
Appreciate your help. Thanks.

After about four hours, the freezer got down to 10F fresh food side down to 45F. So, I think we are moving in the right direction. There is more air coming through the vents from the freezer side. The fridge is coming back to life!
Thanks again!
