Sometimes when the washer is filling and adjusting the water flow to match the temp selected, the flow control valve (?) will quickly switch back and forth between hot and cold water. It doesn't do it all the time however....it seems like the washer gets "confused" sometimes.

How does this system work? Is there some kind of sensor that's checking the water temp in the washer? Or is there a sensor that's monitoring the temp of the inflowing water?

The latter would make more sense to me based on the way it's acting....but what do I know! Once the water coming in is full HOT or full COLD, the fill cycle seems to smooth out. There's a but of distance between the washer and the water sources so it takes a bit for the true HOT and true COLD water to reach it.

TIA for your thoughts and help!

Hi.

Most likely it is the bad thermistor build in to the water inlet valve

Part number: 3979346
Part number: 3979346

You would have to replace the hole valve assembly. Before doing that make sure that the screens inside the fill hoses are clean.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and 02-Controls and Rear Panel Parts parts for Maytag MTW5830TW0 - AppliancePartsPros.com

Post the results.

Simon.
