I have an Amana bottom freezer. The freezer portion has heavy ice buildup inside & along the back wall. Additionally, the coils/outside back section of the unit are full of ice.
I'm not mechanically inclined. The unit is approx 11 yrs old.
Should I replace or call a techincian to repair? Not sure if it is worth a repair at this point.
Thanks!
Melanie

If the freezer is very cold, locate a large access hole in the bottom of the control panel in the fridg section. Turn the control till the compressor and fans stop. If you get defrost action, you have a bad defrost timer AP4077325. If not, defrost the evaporator coils and replace the defrost thermostat clipped tot he top of the evaporator coils.

Thank you for the help! I looked at the control panel, and I turned the dial until the compressor and fan stopped. I'm not sure if the unit started defrosting, though. The only other access hole I found had a screw in it, and when I turned the screw the cover over the light bulbs came off...that was about it.
I did defrost the unit by unplugging it for a few days. Once all the frost buildup in the freezer melted, we plugged it back in & it is working again. The unit made ice cubes in a tray rather quickly.
I did look for the defrost thermostat you mentioned, clipped to the top of the evaporator coils. I looked in the freezer, and I couldn't find it. Is there somewhere I can get a drawing for this model to find where the thermostat is?
Unit is an Amana Model ARB190ZCC, Mfg No PARB190ZCC0, Serial No 10855057AJ
Thanks again for the help!

You have to remove the freezer back panel to get to the defrost thermostat.
