I have a ten year old Kenmore 80 series washer (model #11020802990) that started making a grinding noise while spinning. Water drained, but clothes were coming out still soaked at the end of the cycle. Now it is only making the grinding noise and will not spin.
I have no problem replacing parts, just not sure where to start.
I initially checked the drain pump for blockage and found none. Not sure if I should replace the clutch, motor coupling or something else next. Is there a way to determine if those parts are worn/damaged?
Thanks for any help
Jim

Hi. There are a couple of things you need to check. First would be the drive block, check if the grooves are in tacked and the spin tube is engaging the drive block. Removal of the agitator is required. The drive block Part number: 389140
Next drop down the transmission and check the clutch and drive basket for broken parts. The clutch Part number: 285785
The drive basket Part number: 285792
If all of this checks OK it may be a bad transmission itself. Post the results. Simon.

Simon,
The drive block looks good. I have the clutch off and don't see anything broken, but is there a way to tell if it is bad?

Hi. Look for worn out break pads in the clutch and basket drive, also check the bottom portion of the basket drive. Put the clutch and transmissiion back, bypass the lid switch and turn the washer to spin. Check if the silver color cup (clutch portion mounted on the top of the transmission) is rotating. If it is - the clutch is bad. If not - the transmission is, part number Part number: 3360629
Simon.

Clutch is not rotating, so I guess it is the transmission. Not sure it is worth fixing. Tanks for the help
