I replaced a broken motor coupler, now the washer works, but during the spin cycle there is a loud high-pitched squeak and the smell of burning rubber. Is normal "break-in" for a new coupler or is there something else wrong?

There is no "break-in" period for the coupler. Remove the cabinet, jump out the lid switch and run it in spin with cabinet off. Try to locate source of noise and smell. Run it in spin with pump removed from motor to rule out pump problem. May be something caught between the tubs.

I'm a novice and don't know how to "jump" out the lid switch, but I took off the cabinet and washtub cover. when I spun the tub by hand it was very tight, then loosened a bit, but I could see the plastic piece in the clutch maybe slipping. I ran the washer on spin and the squeak is gone but now I hear clicking and still a faint smell of burning. Could it be the clutch? I know I can replace that, but if it's the brake shoes, that might be too much for me!

It's difficult to spin the basket by hand because the brake is engaged. Noise could be a lot of things including the clutch. Probably best to get an experienced tech in to look at it.
