About 3 months ago, the coupling between motor & tranny broke, so I replaced that and the clutch assembly. Everything was great, washer worked fine and was quiet. Then about 2 weeks ago it started to make a clunk when it stopped. I also noticed some light water stains underneath. The water seems to be coming from around the top where the bleach dispenser is. I'm pretty sure the leak and noise are not related. So, I took out the motor and tranny again and there seems to be some oil leaking from the tranny seal. Some of the oil was inside the clutch. Not a whole lot of oil, but some. I can't take the brake shoes out because I don't have the special wrench, but I turned the cam and they seem to apply & release. The inside of the clutch drum seems to be worn a little & I can see some copper in spots. The clutch pads seem to be worn funny. Most of the pad is white, but a triangular patch on the edge seems to be worn. I don't know if this is normal breakin or not. Could definitely use a second opinion.

Where did you buy the clutch from? How much was the cost?

From e bay, I think it may have been around $20

Ok, hard to say. Many people get these clutches from amazon for $8 and they are not genuine Whirlpool parts and only last for a few loads. They are cheap junk parts. If it came in a sealed plastic package with the Whirlpool FSP logo, it may be genuine but these clutches generally go for around $35. Oil in the clutch is not good and needs to be fixed. You would need to replace the seals unless the oil is coming from the spin tube but the question is, is where is the clunk noise coming from? Could be the brakes grabbing, something in the gearcase or bearings in the spin tube or centerpost.
