During the agitation cycle the motor/centrifugal switch repeatedly clicks. It seems like the motor is working OK but switch is turning on and off (or so it appears). I can see something within the confines of the motor engaging and disengaging as well. If the cycle is long enough I think the motor overheats and trips the thermal switch. Once it cools a bit it will restart and continue (making the same sounds). The spin cycle seems to work perfectly (comes up to speed ok) though there does seem to be a slow spin at first where I hear the same symptoms until the high speed spin kicks in).

During the agitation cycle I'm assuming the motor should run continuously. I just can't grasp why the switch is turning on and off.

I don't see anyway to attach a short video or sound clip or I would.

Any thoughts/ideas where to start?

Could be either the motor switch, motor winding or speed select switch (fabric selector). I would need a clear photo of the wiring diagram and timer chart to further pin it down and help to troubleshoot. Do you have a multimeter? Post your video to youtube. The motor always starts in high speed regardless of speed selected, then the centrifugal mechanism operates the motor switch to redirect power through the speed select switch. If there is a fault in the switch or motor, the motor shuts down and as soon as centrifugal mechanism changes back, it starts again in high speed and just repeats.

I do have a multimeter. Here is a short video of the motor and the noise. I have also attached a pic of the cycle chart, about the best I could get since it is rather small.

Does it do the same thing during agitate in the delicate setting?

I somehow knew you were going to ask that question. Answer is NO.

Go to the rinse fill part of the permanent press cycle. After agitation and drain, it should go through a spin low, spin medium and spin high. If it works ok during the three spin speeds, it looks like you have a bad timer. If it does the on/off thing during medium spin, it looks like the motor. You would need to check continuity on the medium speed motor winding.

It seems like it works just fine in the permanent press mode. I started it a bit early in the cycle so it was doing an agitate at medium where it worked ok. It is just finishing up the lo spin, med spin, and hi spin with no problems. (I did check the continuity of the windings all looked ok).

So if it is the timer, is it something that can be cleaned or better to just be replaced?

Well, medium agitate in perm press uses the same timer switch (16) as medium agitate in regular cycle so it appears the problem is a worn cam and not a bad contact. A different part of the cam on the rotating drum is used during perm press than is used during regular cycle. I would just replace the timer to make sure that's going to fix the problem and if it does, then tear into your old one and see what you can find.
