My freezer coil keeps icing up right where the refrigerant line changes from small to big. I have changed defrost thermostat, checked heater (under 50 ohms) and changed the freezer thermistor. Freezer seems to cool for one cycle and then not after that so I assumed a defrost problem but now I'm wondering if it's low on refrigerant? No sign of leaks but there is a tap on the line near the compressor. I bought the unit used a few years ago and it has been working well til now. Been working on this for a week and I'm stumped.

There may be some heavier frost at the top of the evaporator coil but it should not be excessive.

Also after an hour or so of running the frost should be fairly even over the rest of the coil. If there is no frost on the bottom then odds are that you are low on freon.

You said there is a tap at the compressor so I am assuming that you bought it used and it has been worked on in the past.

Below is an example of low freon units, see the example pictures about half way down the page.

Seems like it's low on refrigerant, unless your condensing fan is not working.
