I've never cleaned the filter in my Sears Kenmore Ultra-wash dishwasher Model Series 16770 which I purchased new in 1988. The manual gives no mention of a filter. The washer is starting to make a weird sound and I'm thinking that after all these years it may be caused by a clogged filter. Is there anyone out there that can direct me into how to clean the filter if there is one?
TIA

In order to provide most accurate advice we need the complete model number of the dishwasher and more specific description on the problem.

Gene the Model # is 665.1677580, this is a Kenmore Dishwasher. It is very hard to describe the sound it is making. It's a medium pitch whine as if it was straining somewhere. The upper spray arm is not bound up. I'm wondering if there could be a clog in some kind of a filter either one bringing water in or one letting dirty water out. Is the Grate below the upper spray arm the only filter that this system has?

Sorry for the delay. The first thing I would do is remove the pump outlet (#14 on the diagram) and check for a foreign objects inside. Remove the wash impeller and the separator assembly (#9) and check the chopper (#19) and its spring. Gene.

Good morning Gene:
I did all you suggesed but everything looked fine. I went out and purchased a new Bosch dishwasher this weekend and just completed the installation Sunday night. Have not had a chance to run it yet but I've heard good things about Bosch, time will. Once again thanks for your help.
